We live in strange times. Everybody wants a piece of the action when it comes to making everyone else recognize and accept their way of doing things. Years ago, when an immigrant stepped off the boat at Ellis Island; his first concern was learning American English and American culture. Today his greatest concern is learning to manipulate the political system to its own ends.
The formal President Bush of the United States said at a State of the Union address: "We have grown into an experiment in democratic diversity fueled by openness and promise. My fellow Americans, we must never, ever believe that our diversity is a weakness -it is our greatest strength."
Sounds well and intellectually correct. However, with all due respect to the office of Formal President Bush, what made this nation strong was not encouraging diversity. It was calling all newcomers into the culture and society that had developed to be exclusively and uniquely American.
I repeat: With all due respect to the office of Formal President Bush, what made this nation strong was not encouraging diversity. It was calling all newcomers into the culture that had become uniquely American.
Someone far wiser than our sitting President has said, "Any kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; or, a house divided against itself falls." Or, "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Yes, God said it first. This saying always confuses us, "Abraham Lincoln said it?" Old Abe was quoting GodGod said it.
Old Abe did not compromise with the Bible.
Do not misapprehend. The Bible does instruct us to be tolerant and forbearing of others. "And just as you want people to treat you, treat them in the same manner." It also indicates we should be open to learning fresh truths. "Let everyone be speedy to hear, unhurried to speak and sluggish to rage. The blindness brought on by conceit and a clogged mind can prevent one from seeing God's truth. But this new "tolerance" and "open-mindedness" goes beyond.
(Please take note to this assertion). It not only demands that we be tolerant of the rights of others to believe what they want, it teaches that the ways of each culture must be recognized as equally legitimate and correct. No culture is better than another; no matter what strange, stupid, or destructive ideas it holds. If you say anything different, you're a bigot or racist. (I wonder how "open-minded" those promoting multiculturalism would be if an ethnic group of head-hunter-cannibals (or people eaters) could learn enough about manipulating the political organization to be recognized)? We are already having problems with certain religions housing kids and the leaders utilizing them as they wish with the law backing them. One religion says, yes, man can marry a man and woman can marry a woman, and the law backs it. Then there is a sect that gives dogs more rights than man. Some say, "We are going to the dogs."
Of course, the superhighway doesn't go both ways. Have you noticed lately that some of the gurus of tolerance and multiculturalism appear just a bit intolerant of your Christian belief structures? (Miss California Carrie Prejean, 21, first ignited controversy at the April 19 09 pageant when she told judge Perez Hilton that she believed marriage should be between only a man and a woman, igniting a cultural debate. The runner-up said her answer cost her the crown). Makes you think it is a sin to follow your parents, the ones that brought you into the world. Have you had the feeling lately that, as anything and everything comes crawling and slithering out of the closet, you are bound, gagged, dragged and pushed back into the cabinet? Have you noticed that in today's social environment, you can say and do almost anything you want as long as you do not articulate your view that someone else's belief or behavior is wrong? Why are those who squeal "tolerance" so loudly today are so intolerant of the moral base on which this country was built and the people who stand for it?
All is tolerated; it seems, except the good old "Judeo-Christian ethic."
